10 cool facts about Detroit’s legendary J.L. Hudson’s store

Generations of Detroiters still cherish their memories of the giant Hudson’s store on Woodward Avenue in the city’s downtown.

It was 22 years ago this weekend that the building was imploded, on Oct. 24, 1998. Here are cool facts that history buffs or just-plain veteran shoppers can use to stroke their fond memories of that signature Detroit experience — visiting Hudson’s.

The store

The J.L. Hudson Co. store in downtown Detroit began in 1911 with a modest building, but after numerous additions it grew to be the tallest department store in the world. It was 25 stories tall, and 32 floors, including its four basements, a mezzanine and two half floors. An estimated 100,000 shoppers and employees each day filled the huge building on Woodward Avenue at its peak.
