Dundee High School students are paired with elementary students to participate in activities such as caring for animals while learning about the farming industry.
DUNDEE – Dundee Elementary School students recently made steps toward becoming future farmers.
As part of Dundee High School’s FFA program, one to three elementary students are paired with high schoolers throughout the year for biweekly agricultural activities, according to Supt. Edward Manuszak.
As a nod to National Public Schools week, which began Monday and runs through Friday, Dundee Community Schools aims to shine a light on FFA, a national program in part championed by way of American public schools.
“Each day this week (we will be) highlighting a program or initiative that we are most proud that demonstrates why public schools matter and that they should be fully supported at all levels of our government,” Manuszak said. Through FFA, the botany, ecosystems and agribusiness classes are paired with elementary students to participate in activities such as caring for animals while learning about the farming industry.
As part of the “PALS” program, the students meet about twice per month throughout the school year.
“The elementary students are encouraged to help grow their community and learn how to work together,” the district announced in a news release. “Introducing the young students to FFA will hopefully persuade them to join FFA when they are in high school.”
The Dundee FFA chapter has been participating in PALS for about 14 years.
