Mass Mob at Catholic church in Detroit’s Indian Village

The monthly Detroit Mass Mob will be held this Sunday at a historic Detroit church that’s surviving by reaching out to its neighborhood.

St. Augustine and St. Monica Catholic Church, a parish in historic Indian Village, was founded in 1989 with parishioners from St. Catherine/St. Edward and St. Bernard parishes, with buildings dating back almost 100 years.

“One thing I have noticed with this church is how well they have evangelized in the neighborhood,” said Thom Mann, who helps coordinate Detroit Mass Mobs at historic Catholic churches in Detroit. “Many of the older parishioners have moved away and rarely come back, and yet this church is doing better than others in the city.”

“These type of churches are like missions,” Mann said. “From the very poor to the wealthy — all working together, what a church should be.”
