Every eighth-grader in Detroit could get a chance to explore careers, discover how a low credit score drives up the cost of a mortgage or a car loan, and pick up skills for managing money in the real world.
Junior Achievement of Southeastern Michigan on Monday is rolling out news about the “JA Financial Freedom Project,” which will give the city’s eighth-grade students an opportunity to receive lessons in the classroom relating to financial literacy and personal finance, and ultimately take a field trip to the Quicken Loans JA Finance Park in Detroit.
“Economic development is dependent on people being able to manage their money,” said Margaret Trimer-Hartley, president and CEO of Junior Achievement of Southeastern Michigan.
The JA Financial Freedom Project is sponsored by GM Financial, which is committing $100,000 to the project. Other sponsors, including those in the financial services arena, are contributing, as well.
