Birmingham

Birmingham Web Links

The formal settlement of the area now known as Birmingham occurred over 180 years ago. The pioneer story of this small Michigan community began when four enterprising families purchased the first parcels totaling 640 acres of land in 1818. They included Elijah Willits, Benjamin Pierce, John Hamilton and John West Hunter. Hunters were the first permanent residents building their log cabin during the winter of 1819. By 1890s long-time residents who had been lobbying for many improvements began to see better roads, the opening of the interurban street car lines, the establishment of paid fire department, clean water supply and for a new public library. These improvements, along with others made Birmingham a very acquaint but highly desirable place to live. In 1933, the growth in population driven in part by the mobility of the automobiles led to the incorporation of Birmingham as a city. Today, Birmingham's business district and residential areas still enjoy many of the small town charm that characterized days gone by.

The Charter Township of Bloomfield, incorporated in 1827, was the first Township to be established in Oakland County, Michigan. Because 95% of the Township is residential, municipal services are geared to homeowners and their needs. Bloomfield Township offers a range and quality of public services far beyond those of most townships in the state.

Clarkston

Clarkston Web Links

Clarkston, which also goes by the somewhat confusing official name City of the Village of Clarkston, is a city located within Independence Charter Township in Oakland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 962 at the 2000 census. The jurisdiction of the city government is limited to a relatively small downtown area commonly referred to as the village. However, persons living in a much larger surrounding area commonly think of themselves as living in Clarkston and may have Clarkston as a postal address. Clarkston was the summer retreat for Henry Ford where he maintained a summer home and weekend cottage on Main Street. The building still stands today.

Commerce Township

Commerce Web Links

Commerce Township is a charter township in Oakland County, Michigan, United States. The population was 34,764 at the 2000 census. The terrain is rolling hills but there are large expanses of flat land on which farms and, more recently, subdivisions are built. The Huron River runs mostly north-south through the township. Commerce was formerly a weekend and summer resort for Detroiters because of the area's small inland lakes and peaceful seclusion, but due to recent development the cottages are now all permanent homes. There has been a sharp increase in population in the last few years, mostly on or near the several lakes and golf courses. Much of Proud Lake State Recreation Area is within the township. The northern terminus of Michigan State Highway 5 is in Commerce. The busy highway would have continued north to I-75, but because of the area's high property value and the many lakes that dot the landscape such a project would have been far too costly. Commerce Township shares borders with West Bloomfield, White Lake, Milford Township, Walled Lake, Wolverine Lake, Novi, and Wixom.

Farmington

Farmington Web Links

Farmington is located in southern Oakland County, just east of the intersections of I-96 and I-275. This town was first settled in 1824 by Arthur Power and David Smith, Quakers from Farmington New York. First referred to as "Quakertown," this community grew as a result of a sawmill Powers built and a strong religious commitment which included the formation of a church in 1826 by Elkanah Comstock, the first Baptist minister to settle in Michigan. It incorporated as a village in 1867 and later as a city in 1926. The downtown square still displays the well-preserved town hall, one of the early architectural masterpieces of the area.

Franklin Village

Franklin Web Links

Franklin is a wonderfully picturesque village. In the mid 1830's Franklin was larger than the small settlement of Birmingham to the east. Birmingham, however, was chosen as a stop on the railroad route between Royal Oak and Pontiac. Birmingham prospered and grew while Franklin, bypassed by the rail line and removed from any major roads, settled back into a quiet existence. Franklin businesses continued to serve the scattered farms around Southfield Township. For other items, people had to travel by horse and wagon to Pontiac, two hours away. Once a community dotted with mills and light industry, the area is now predominately residential, with small pockets of stores, offices and commercial businesses, and of course the Franklin Cider Mill. Current Franklinites are proud to live in "The Town that Time Forgot".

Holly

Holly Web Links

Holly is located on the western border of Oakland County. Its first settler was Nathan Herrick who came to the area in 1830. In 1843, a sawmill was built by Ira C. Alger, and the area was then referred to as Algerville, with Alger taking on the duty of station agent when the Detroit & Milwaukee Railroad came through. Around the same time, a Peter Fagan registered a post office under the name of Holly Mills, with reference to the abundant holly that grew in the area. The post office was renamed Holly in 1861, along with the help of another settler, Jonathan T. Allen, who moved there from Mount Holly, N. J. It eventually incorporated into a village in 1865. This community has worked hard to retain its traditional, Victorian brick architecture in the downtown area, and it is worth a drive to see it. The narrow streets, old-style lamps, unique shops and the Historic Holly Hotel make for a delightful visit to yesteryear, whether winter or summer, rain or shine.

Keego Harbor

Keego Harbor Web Links

Keego Harbor is located in central Oakland County's West Bloomfield Township in what is refered to as the "Lakes Area." It is situated primarily on the southeast side of Cass Lake, around the intersection of Orchard Lake and Cass Lake Roads. A major figure in the development of this village was J. E. Sawyer, who in 1902 settled here and developed the Cass Lake Subdivision on Willow Beach. He also converted what was then Dollar Lake into a "harbor" by constructing a canal to Cass Lake. He named it Keego Harbor, apparently after what is believed to be an old reference to a type of slender fish found in the local waters.
