I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Troy Church of Christ while they were hosting the South Oakland Shelter for the week. Troy Church of Christ is one of 52 Oakland County congregations to host a week of South Oakland Shelter (SOS) each year. SOS is a non-profit organization dedicated to breaking the cycle of homelessness in Oakland County by offering a transitional program to help individuals and families who find themselves without a home due to a variety of circumstances. They were doing a great job organizationally and also personally as they related to men and women who were in need of shelter and friendship.
It looked to me like the volunteers and church members were also having a great time as they banded together providing food, arranging the rooms for overnight guests, providing transportation and all the myriad issues logistics for people getting to work in the morning and other special considerations. Troy Church of Christ is not a large church but that certainly marshaled their forces and did a great job of hospitality to the community a couple weeks ago. They have done this for a number of years.
For 25 years, South Oakland Shelter (SOS) has worked with its 67 partner congregations to provide temporary lodging and supportive services that help homeless individuals and families break the cycle of homelessness, and live independently. With an emphasis on homeless prevention, sustainable housing solutions, and career development, SOS implements strategies and programs that provide realistic options for homeless and at-risk individuals and families seeking stabilization and self-sufficiency.

Thanks for your kind words, Richard. We have found this host site opportunity to a be our heart work at this congregation of believers. We are always looking for volunteers either as individuals or as congregations wishing to partner with us. Our next week of service will be July 9 – 16, 2013. Come and join us we will share this effort side by side.
I truly miss not being able to help out this year because I moved. Wish I knew how to start a sister “SOS” for “Mid-Michigan” area.
Looking forward to next year of helping out Troy, Church of Christ with SOS.
